WWDC 2021

Apple announced WWDC 2021. The conference will take place June 7 to 11. Like last year, this will be an online event. What's interesting each animated avatar promoting a conference has glasses. This prompt a lot of speculations about Apple Glasses or AR/VR Headset announcement during the conference. I personally doubt it, and I believe the avatars have glasses just to show a conference date, but who knows, maybe Apple is teasing us.

Crew Dragon with a nice view

It's not a secret that SpaceX is counting on a space tourism. Relaying on government contracts is a one thing, but space tourism is also a very lucrative business. Especially when you can limit the cost of such expedition. SpaceX has not only made rocket launches affordable, but now they are offering an unforgettable experience, for future space tourists by adding a glass dome on Crew Dragon for 360 views of space.

Hey Google car

Fiat and Google collaborated and made a special version of a Fiat 500.  The car has not only Google's branding but also deep integration with Google Assistant. It will allow users to monitor and control the car through the phone or Google Nest Hub.

Users will be able to check  fuel level, lock status, switch on emergency lights, or find the closest Fiat service station. System can also alert the owner if the car exceeds a certain speed or leaves a certain geographic area.

SpaceX's successful disaster

Space launched the Starship SN10 prototype. As in previous launches, the rocket climbed to the assumed altitude and started free falling. But this time, during the landing attempt, everything went perfectly. Starship returned from free-falling to vertical position and landed on the ground.

It is the first time Starship managed to do that, but the test was not  a complete success. A  couple of minutes after the landing, the rocket exploded. Although SN10 did not survive, Space X is making noticeable progress. So maybe the next time, the rocket will pass the entire test.

Microsoft Mesh

During the Ignite conference, Microsoft announced the AR and VR collaboration platform called Mesh. It is a collaborative platform that allows anyone to have shared virtual experiences. It's like Microsoft Teams of the future. Participants can be in the same place, even though they are not physically together. At the moment, the platform uses virtual avatars taken from the AltspaceVR social network. But in the future, people will be able to appear as themselves.

Microsoft Mesh is a super cool idea that looks like taken from a sci-fi movie, but as some people say - the future is now.

Jeff Bezos steps down as CEO

Jeff Bezos announced that he is going to step down as Amazon CEO later this year. Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), will replace Bezos as Amazon CEO. Bezos motivates his decision by wanting to focus on other projects like Blue Origin, and Bezos Earth Fund.

Another Starship test

SpaceX has launched the Starship rocket for the second time. Once again, it climbed to a target altitude of 10km. After that, the engines shut down, and the rocket started free-falling back to the ground. Unfortunately, like in the previous test, the rocket didn't quite stick the landing. It touched the ground when the rocket was still recovering from belly dive into a vertical position, which ended with a spectacular explosion.

It might seem like a failure, but SpaceX learned a lot. The same Situation was with Falcon 9 rocket - Space X failed many landing during tests, but now they are perfect.

Reddit vs Wall Street

This week Reddit users trolled the heck out of sharks of Wall Street. A hedge fund wanted to earn money by betting that Gamestop stocks would fall. Reddit users noticed that and started buying out the stocks. This caused the rise of stock value by over 1700%. As a result, the hedge fund bankrupted because it couldn't repay all the debts.

This is the first time something like this happened. This whole situation is being compared to French Revolution - "poor and small" people/investors turned against the rich people using their own tactics and tools against them.

Apple is doing just fine

Apple released financial reports for last quarter, and it looks like it  just broke its quarterly revenue record earning $111.4 Billion in Q1 2021. The revenue mostly comes from iPhones (42%) but iPad also gained a lot (in total 7%), and almost matched the Macs (8%).

SpaceX carpooling?

SpaceX launched Falcon 9 rocket with record breaking 143 satellites. This was done under the SmallSat Rideshare Program which is basically a space carpooling. Small businesses can share a flight with other companies instead of buying an entire rocket at a much higher price.

With such program, SpaceX has done just another step into affordable space exploration.

Cyberpunk 2077 released

CD Project Red, after 9 years of development, finally released the Cyberpunk 2077. First reviews are very positive. CDP Red once again delivered very solid game, although it is far from being perfect. The game is hunted by many little bugs. Bugs are not  unexpected as the game is huge, but they make the  experience less pleasant.  Overall it looks like Cyberpunk is solid game and it somehow met the expectations.

Starship launch

Space X has performed a test flight of the Starship. The launch was verifying following scenario:

1. ✅ Launch Starship,
2. ✅ Achieve altitude of 12.5 KM,
3. ✅ Shutdown engines and rotate rocket on it's belly,
4. ✅  Fall free,
5. ✅ Turn on engines and rotate the rocket to the vertical position,
6. ❌ Land on the ground.

The test  ran perfectly until the landing. The pressure in fuel cells was too low, which resulted in higher touch down speed than anticipated, which ultimately caused an explosion.

Despite the fact, that Starship is gone, the test was successful.

AirPods Max

Apple announce AirPods Max - the over-ear noise-canceling headphones. Here are selected features:

• Active Noise Cancellation,
• Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking,
• Audio Sharing,
• Digital Crown for controlling volume and playback,
• Magnetic ear cups,
• Apple H1 chip, in each ear cup, for fast connecting with Apple devices and device switching,
• Sensors in each cup can detect whether they are placed on a user’s head and pause playback when removed,
• Bluetooth 5 compatible,
• 20h of battery life,
• Come in five colors: space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink.

AirPods Max  will be available from December 15th for $549.

New ARM macs in 2021

According to latest rumors, Apple is working on new 32-core chip, that will be shipped with upcoming iMacs and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Looking at performance of the current M1 chip, it is something worth waiting for.

Apple Fitness+

Apple also announced that Fitness+ will launch on December 14th. The workout service will be available only in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, and the US  for $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year.
